The board below is that comparison: each dot is today, each tick a stamped day before it, and the signed number how far today sits from its usual.
It is a measure of attention, not of importance. A domain can be loud because one story is being repeated, and quiet while something real is forming in it. That is why the cover leads with what was read rather than with what was counted.
